What a better language result is really worth

Same profile, only the language result changes (single, age 29, bachelor's degree, 3 years of foreign skilled work, no Canadian experience; the second column adds an accompanying spouse with a bachelor's degree and no language test). Language points rise steadily, but the big jump comes at CLB 9 in all four abilities, where skill-transferability points roughly double.

When one ability holds the others back

With CLB 9 in listening, reading and writing but CLB 8 in speaking, this profile scores 384. Raising speaking alone to CLB 9 gives 429 (+45): only 8 of those points are language points; the other 37 come from skill transferability, which needs CLB 9 in all four abilities. Calculated with the same engine as our calculator, using IRCC's current criteria. Your gain depends on your education, work history and spouse.

1. Retake your language test and aim for CLB 9

Language counts four times (once per ability) in core points and again in skill transferability. CLB 9 in all four abilities is the threshold that unlocks the higher transferability values. Check your current level with the CLB calculator.

2. Learn French to NCLC 7

French at NCLC 7 in all four abilities adds up to 50 additional points plus second-language points, and makes you eligible for French-language proficiency draws — the lowest French cut-off in the last 12 months was 382.

3. Add a second post-secondary credential

Two or more credentials (one of three years or more) score higher than a single degree, and a Canadian credential also gives 15–30 additional points. Foreign credentials need an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA).

4. Gain Canadian work experience

The first year of skilled Canadian work is worth 40 core points (single) and adds skill-transferability points. It is also the core requirement of the Canadian Experience Class, which additionally requires the work to be within the last 3 years and minimum language levels (CLB 7 for TEER 0 or 1 jobs, CLB 5 for TEER 2 or 3), among other conditions.

5. Count all your foreign work experience

Three years of foreign skilled work gives the maximum foreign-experience transferability points when combined with CLB 9 or Canadian experience.

6. Check whether your spouse should be the principal applicant

Run the calculator both ways. A partner with a stronger profile, or a spouse who takes a language test, can change the total noticeably.

7. Claim a sibling in Canada

A brother or sister in Canada (18+, citizen or PR) — yours or your spouse's — adds 15 points.

8. Qualify for a category-based draw

Category draws (French, healthcare, trades, education and others) often have lower cut-offs. See the latest draws by category.

9. Get a provincial nomination

An enhanced provincial nomination adds 600 points, which is why cut-offs in PNP rounds are far above other rounds. Getting a nomination is the hard part: each province has its own streams, criteria and intake periods.

FAQ

How many CRS points do I gain going from CLB 8 to CLB 9?

For a single applicant with a bachelor's degree and 3 years of foreign work, CLB 8 → CLB 9 in all four abilities adds 69 points: 32 in first-language points and 37 in skill transferability. The exact gain depends on your education and work history — check yours in the calculator.

What is the fastest way to increase my CRS score?

For most candidates it is a better language test result. Moving from CLB 7 to CLB 9 in all four abilities adds core language points and can double several skill-transferability points.

How many points does French add?

NCLC 7 in all four French abilities gives 50 additional points if your English is CLB 5 or higher in all four abilities (25 otherwise), plus up to 24 second-language points — and eligibility for French-language draws.

Does a job offer still increase my CRS score?

No. Since March 25, 2025, job offers no longer give CRS points. A job offer can still help in other ways, for example through some provincial nominee programs.

Can I update my Express Entry profile after improving my score?

Yes. Update your profile with new test results, credentials or experience; your CRS score is recalculated. Your profile must stay accurate at all times.
